The Ginger Malcom Scholarship Award
Ginger Malcom lived with Type 1 diabetes for more than 43 years having been diagnosed at age seven. Her years with diabetes had taken their toll, despite accessible tools enabling her to manage and control her diabetes with relative ease. Ginger used a talking glucometer for checking her glucose levels and a Count-A-Dose for drawing her insulin doses. Ginger was a native Floridian born and raised in Orlando. Ginger attended UCF and received an undergraduate degree is in Psychology, a Masters industrial/Organizational Psychology also from UCF and a Masters from FSU in Visual Disabilities.
Ginger’s passion was LGBTQ youth, and she sat on two boards for agencies providing services to LGBTQ youth. She had been on the City of Orlando’s Civil Rights Board for six years and was a certified county court mediator and provided mediation services every Tuesday at the Orange County Courthouse.
Touched by Type 1 was honored to have Ginger Malcom deliver an impactful presentation at the first ever conference held in 2017 – to which those she spoke to, will never forget.
